You can be selfish as a mother and care about your kids at the same time because your sense of self expands to include them.
Are there things your mother "always said"? My children claim I do, and though at first I doubted it, this collection of my favorite opinions and beliefs is for the pudding of which they are the proof.

Here's one I don't think I've added before: There's always room at the top. It basically means - if you're great at what you do, it doesn't matter if there is someone else out there who is also great at what you do, because the world always needs, enjoys and appreciates greatness.
Mom on how to get rich: There's a constant flow of money in the world, and you just have to be near it and dip into it every once in a while.
So said mom about learning new pieces on the violin. But it applies to many things.
