motherhood and expansion of the self
You can be selfish as a mother and care about your kids at the same time because your sense of self expands to include them.
Are there things your mother "always said"? My children claim I do, and though at first I doubted it, this collection of my favorite opinions and beliefs is for the pudding of which they are the proof.

Does it ever!
It's not the same thing as basking in reflected glory, nice as that can be.
And it's not exactly the same thing as "Love is desiring the growth of the loved one." Even though I believe that to be also true, that love often makes you want the best for the person you love, even when their growth and change doesn't directly benefit you, and could even work against you.
It's really more a mommy-daddy "my kid" thing, or an expansion of your consciousness to include this other creature.
