You can't say you don't like a piece until you can play it.
So said mom about learning new pieces on the violin. But it applies to many things.
Are there things your mother "always said"? My children claim I do, and though at first I doubted it, this collection of my favorite opinions and beliefs is for the pudding of which they are the proof.

I'm glad you reminded me of this one. I used it in a Calling Party last week. Contra dancers were having trouble with an English dance, largely because some of the basic moves are unfamiliar.
I told them how my violin students would complain about some piece because it was too hard, and that I would tell them that they didn't have to like it, but that they weren't allowed to tell me they didn't like it until they could play it. Most of the time, of course, as soon as they could play it, it became their favorite piece. But every once in a while I would praise them for being able to play the piece, and, if they still didn't like it, we both enjoyed the student shouting "I really hate this piece!" "YES! I would say, you have definitely earned the right to hate this piece!"
