Giving Makes the Heart Grow Fonder

I can never remember how you put these things! The idea was that being giving and loving to someone makes you love the person more. So if you want to fall in love with someone, do something nice for them.

You got it, kid.

That's it, simple as pie. Oddly unintuitive, but it seems to work.

It works the other way, too. If you're mean to someone, you end up not liking them. I don't know exactly what the psychological mechanism is, but it's quite amazing.

Someone might say "Well, the reason you were mean to them was that you didn't like them to begin with," but I contend that you are often mean because you are frustrated with some part of your life that may or may not have anything to do with that person. Then when you're mean to them, and stop liking them, it begins to seem as if your frustration could be eliminated by getting away from them. That's when you find out, to your chagrin, as Mary Englebreit put it, "Wherever you go, there you are."
